Using centrifugal or membrane filtration techniques, apheresis equipment is used to separate certain blood elements, such as cells, plasma, platelets, or leukocytes. The residual blood components are subsequently put back into the donor's or patient's bloodstream. It is used to treat a number of medical disorders and in blood banks. Modern apheresis technology has recently been developed, allowing for the collection of concentrated platelets or red blood cells (RBCs). These features include fluid flow dynamics and auto elutriation.
