Farm Business Innovation Show - Safely Returning to "Normality"

    By Chloe Alonzi

    Published 8 hours ago

As the world is slowly but surely returning to “normality” as we once knew it, we are delighted to be welcoming back the Farm Business Innovation Show this year on the 10th & 11th November at the NEC Birmingham. Whilst we are excited to finally be opening doors again in person, we appreciate that there are some reservations surrounding attending such busy events and mixing with other people after being in our own bubbles for so long. We wouldn’t be going ahead with this event if we didn’t feel it was safe, and we want to make sure that you feel safe attending the show and have the best experience possible. Following government guidelines and advice from the team at the NEC, these are the measures currently in place to ensure the safety of everyone at the event:Anyone wishing to enter any of the Rural Entrepreneur shows will have to provide either proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test within 48 hours of attending - please note that there will be a limited number of lateral flow tests available at the venue, however these will be distributed on a first come first served basisTesting and tracing is supported at the event and all exhibitors, visitors, staff etc onsite will be recordedVisitors have been asked to pre-register for tickets which are being sent to you to bring along with you, to limit unnecessary contact with staffMasks are no longer mandatory as per government guidelines, however they are advisedThe NEC have also taken extra steps to increase the safety of their venue, including:Testing and tracing is supported via pre-booked parkingTouch points throughout the venue are limitedSanitising stations present throughout the venueEnhanced sanitation throughout both days across the venue, particularly focussing on frequent contact servicesWashroom attendants present to ensure hygiene standards are maintained at all timesWe understand that the thought of being in a room full of people, and for many of you for the first time in over a year, can be quite daunting, but we promise to do everything we can to make you feel as comfortable and safe as possible. It has been an incredibly tough year for the agricultural industry and we have been making sure that the Farm Business Innovation Show provides everything you could possibly need and more to support you on your diversification and innovation journey...

I got to spend some time at the Island Hopper Songwriter's Festival on Captiva Island this weekend. All I can think about is the article a good friend @Ray Bohacz wrote recently titled Are You the 'Singer or the Songwriter', I highly recommend reading it - https://northamericanag.com/news/are-you-the-singer-or-the-songwriter.

The hearts behind the great songs of George Strait, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Tim McGraw, Diamond Rio & Garth Brooks are beautiful! I feel so lucky to have been able to hear the songs they wrote from their mouths - Aaron Barker, Maia Sharp, Bobby Tomberlin, Julia Cole, Clint Daniels, Dave Pahanish, Dan Couch & Steve Dorf. #IslandHopperFest

Plant Genetic Modification by CRISPR/CAS9 Now Available at Lifeasible

    By Isla Miller

    Published Jul 30

Lifeasible, a world leading biotechnology company specialized in agricultural science, now offers plant genetic modification by CRISPR/CAS9 to provided engineered plants with enhanced properties. CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing is a technique for rapid editing of genomic DNA with very high efficiency and specificity, and its mechanism is the same as that used by prokaryotes to defend against viral or other foreign DNA invasion. Cas9 is an RNA-guided DNA endonuclease associated with CRISPR. SgRNAs (single-guideRNAs) are packaged with multiple crRNAs and tracrRNA that can bind Cas9 and direct this complex to complementary sequences in the target DNA. The HNH and RuvC domains of Cas9 then cleave DNA 3 bp upstream of the PAM (archetypal spacer adjacent motif) site (usually NGG), thus creating a DSB (DNA double-strand break)...

This is encouraging, funding for #agrepreneurs... includes a regenerative farm using a silvopasture system, an indoor hydroponic garden entity, a Gullah Farmers Coop, a woman owned certified organic farm, and more. Thank you to ACRE - Agribusiness Center for Research and Entrepreneurship for supporting these innovators.

How to know the water distribution of a leaf? Nanoscale sensors do it

    By Isla Miller

    Published Jun 28

The water regulation in the leaves is essential to the health of the plant, affecting its growth and yield, susceptibility and drought resistance. The surface of the leaves is the most active part of the plant for water management. A breakthrough technology developed by researchers at Cornell University uses nanoscale sensors and optical fibers to measure the water status of leaf surfaces. This engineering feat provides a minimally invasive research tool that will greatly advance the understanding of basic plant biology and open the door to breeding more drought-resistant crops. This technology may eventually be applied to agronomic tools that measure crop moisture status in real time...

2021 Oregon Seed Crops Report - Cover Crops, Forages, Turf

    By Risa DeMasi

    Published Jun 14

As reported by Jerry Hall, GO SeedThe 2021 crop is going to be very interesting as inventory stocks on many turf, forage, and cover crop seed species are at all time lows. There will certainly be a lot of jockeying for position at the cleaning facilities by a lot of companies for a lot of different species. The Oregon seed industry will be working diligently to try to get as much seed out as quickly as possible but there will be issues. Production fields looked rough going into the winter and many fields didn’t look a whole lot better coming out of it. The damage last summer/fall from voles was real and devastating, in some areas, leaving fields lacking in plant population...

According to tripwire.com, the average ransomware payout in 2020 shot up to $312,493. and the highest paid was $30,000,000. So, for a number of reasons it makes sense that hackers would go after food supply chains 1) unprotected technology 2) food is essential to life... scary stuff.

Recent advances in the study of plant cryopreservation mechanism

    By Isla Miller

    Published Apr 28

Cryopreservation is a technique to preserve cells, tissues, and organs in liquid nitrogen (− 196 °C) and is widely used in the long-term preservation of animal, plant, and microbial germplasm resources. Ultra-low temperature preservation of plants is usually combined with in vitro culture technology, which can achieve long-term safe preservation of pollen, injured tissues, somatic embryos, zygotic embryos, seeds, meristems and dormant buds. The ultra-low temperature preservation technology of important crops and ornamental plants is relatively mature, and the main wild species and varieties of potatoes and bananas worldwide have been stored at ultra-low temperature. Germplasm banks are the most effective and economical means of ex situ conservation of wild plants. Most of the seeds of wild plants can be stored at low temperature (− 20 °C) for a long time after dehydration, and their lifespan has been greatly extended...

Our team at Treely was excited to attend S.C. State University 1890 Research & Demonstration Farm's Grand Opening. Equally excited to have crafted drone & mapping for the project. Congrats SCSU!

In these days in time, life is harder for some than others....Keep holding strong family and friends: A little laughter to lighten the load:

    4. Old ranch owner John farmed a small ranch in Montana. The Montana Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him.
"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent.
"Well," replied old John, "There's my ranch hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90 percent of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night."
"That's the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit," says the agent.
"That would be me," replied old rancher John.
