How Precision Technology can Tackle Cotton’s Irrigation and Pests’ Challenges in the 2020s

    By Vijayalaxmi Kinhal

    Published Aug 3

The high-value returns from cotton as well as the higher costs of production should be ample incentives for adopting precision farming. The vagaries of climate change and its disruptions to the normal farm schedule only increases the value of this information technology for cotton. Climate Change is Altering Pest Attack PatternsIncreasing drought and extreme weather due to climate change are impacting cotton in unforeseen ways. The unpredictable changes in weather patterns aren’t just disturbing the environmental conditions needed for cotton crops. Experts noticed since 2019 that the feeding and reproductive patterns of pests have changed...

Variable-Rating Fertilizer: Does It Pay Off?

    By Laura Barrera

    Updated May 12

For growers who are trying to follow the “4Rs” of nutrient stewardship — applying the right fertilizer source at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place, as set forth by The Fertilizer Institute — variable-rate technology (VRT) can help them tackle two of the four, as it can determine the right rate and the right place based on prescription maps. Unfortunately, it doesn’t guarantee those benefits will provide a return on investment. Consider a study conducted in North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota from 2000-2003, where fields were divided so that nitrogen fertilizer was either variable-rated or applied uniformly. As the North Dakota State University (NDSU) article explains, using nitrogen fertilizer recommendations at the time and variable-rate applying it on a zone approach provided no economic advantage over the uniform rate. However, the same article cites a study conducted for more than 10 years on a 40-acre field in North Dakota where variable-rating nitrogen resulted in a $14...

When working with large portions of land it can be extremely difficult to give each plant the attention that it needs to thrive. That is why Farm Flight uses machine learning technology to check the nitrogen levels of all your plants for you. With this technology, farmers can easily see how their fields are performing, and if they need to apply more fertilizer to a given area.

SUNCUE Rice Husk Furnace: From Fossil Fuel Agriculture to Ecological Cycle AgricultureIn order to pursue high production, fossil fuel is used in large quantities in modern agricultural activities. The large-scale use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides requires oil as raw materials; agricultural machinery also uses diesel and natural gas for production activities. This is fossil fuel agriculture. Excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers will accumulate in the soil, pollute the soil, water, air, and pollute the ecological environment. Agricultural machinery consumes a large amount of diesel and natural gas, and produces carbon dioxide greenhouse gases, causing extreme weather...

  • How Precision Technology can Tackle Cotton’s Irrigation and Pests’ Challenges in the 2020s
