CoBank's Knowledge Exchange division recently partnered with the University of Missouri to study the economic fabric that supports rural and agricultural communities. The report outlines the changes to farm household employment and income dynamics over the past few decades. The results reveal increasingly interconnected rural and urban economies, and a farm economy that is deeply supported by off-farm jobs.

AfDB makes USD 9 million Equity Investment in Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria

The African Development Bank has approved a USD 9 million equity investment (approximately 12% of the fund’s capitalisation) in the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) to provide expansion capital to agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

FAFIN is a first-generation private equity fund that provides financial, capacity-building and technical assistance to commercially viable SMEs in the Nigerian agribusiness sector, through a unique value chain-centric approach, and using a combination of equity, quasi-equity and convertible loan instruments. FAFIN implements its strategy and constructs its portfolio through a bifocal lens consisting of the twin objectives of competitive financial returns and measurable positive social impact.

The Fund is jointly sponsored by the German KfW Development Bank and the Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD). The Fund Manager is Sahel Capital (Mauritius) Limited, a fund management firm incorporated in Mauritius in 2013.

The project is expected to deliver strong development outcomes from (i) household benefits and employment through the creation of a large number of jobs and the provision of certain agricultural products; (ii) positive gender and social effects through the implementation of out-grower schemes and supporting rural development; and (iii) private sector development through alleviation of financial constraints faced by agribusinesses and enhancing agricultural value chains.

In line with my theme on factual agricultural history, I thought I would share some interesting information from Dr. Freda Wunderlich in her seminal book published by Princeton University. Between 1871 and 1900, 2.7 million Germans immigrated to the United States because they were treated as slaves in every aspect in their former country. They were predominantly "landfolk" (farmers and farm laborers). The United States is not the first place were socialists have attempted to misrepresent history and the plight of farmers. Dr. Wunderlich identified that one worker wrote as to why he chose a miserable life in Berlin over a life on the farm: " you and your lot were or amazed that we ran away. You gentlemen are responsible for it. We shall vote as the lord (of the estate/landowner) wants; we shall read with the lord permits; we shall keep our mouth shut about the suppression of the people; we shall stoop under the regiment of the Mr. Administrator - no". It is worth noting that these landfolk were not previously permitted to even pursue a different career without express permission of the lord of the estate. Furthermore, the children would also be born into the same work, and the majority of the landowners wanted them educated as little as possible - only enough to do their jobs, but not enough to want more. Clearly, the majority of those who immigrated during that timeframe chose a life of freedom over slavery. The result of this turmoil is what led to the rapid rise of the national socialist party in Germany. This is only one of many countries who contributed to our "melting pot" society, and why it is so crucial that we push back against false or misleading agricultural history
