7 Ways to Measure Soil Health Improvements

    By Laura Barrera

    Published Mar 7, 2019

While there are numerous reasons for using cover crops, a primary one is improving soil health. In fact, it’s the one benefit most farmers using cover crops have experienced: In the most recent Cover Crop Survey Annual Report, of those who rated the statement, “Using cover crops has improved soil health on my farm,” 86% agreed or strongly agreed. The report notes that it’s interesting and heartening that “soil health reflects an embrace of a long-term, hard-to-quantify benefit of cover crops, and that for the past two surveys, it has achieved the top spot by garnering 86% of the responses... If you’re in the Midwest, it’ll probably take 3-5 years to see your organic matter levels increase on your soil test results, she says, and if you’re in a drier region you may not see any significant changes for 5-10 years... “They’ll start seeing a marked increase in that nice crumbly feel in their soil,” she explains, noting that this can occur as soon as the first season after using cover crops for growers in more humid regions, like the Corn Belt, while it may take a little longer for southern and western regions where conditions are drier and the some of the soils are more degraded...

A Tale of Two Dairies - Part Two

    By John Moody

This is part two in my series exploring the stories of various farmers around the country of all kinds, shapes, and sizes. You can catch part one here, A Tale of Two Dairies - Sweet Grass Dairy There is a stretch of interstate that runs crooked across the center of the US Midwest, connecting the rust belt region of northeast Ohio to the lands just beyond the Appalachia in central Kentucky. I-71... As the sun set on the rolling hills of north central Pennsylvania, Jacob and Elizabeth Coleman found themselves in a similar spot - their small farm house, after a long day of farm work, with limited time and resources to figure out a way forward for their growing family... Its bones were 150 acres of rolling pastures on the far north western edge of the Appalachian foothills that stretch towards central Ohio...

    Understanding Agrilend and the MERCOSUR

    By Robert Morgan

    Published Jun 17, 2018

The MERCOSUR is a powerful dominant force in international global markets and originally began with its Members;Bolivia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina as direct Member Countries, in South America, however it is rapidly gaining momentum by its cooperative Associate Member Countries in Central America and its international prowess relies on its ability to cooperate confidential public private initiative agreements with cooperating countries desiring to do corporate business attached with attractive concensions by partnering with MERCOSUR for the sake of obtaining finance, capital, agricultural export or import, natural resources and as an exchange for favor... Now, over the years its influence has spread to adopt Associate Member Countries in Central America in which are showing greater economic resilience and investment opportunities. Central America is the southernmost, isthmian portion of the North American continent, which connects with the South American continent on the southeast. Central America is bordered by Mexico to the north, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Central America consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama...

There is a stretch of interstate that runs crooked across the center of the US Midwest, connecting the rust belt region of northeast Ohio to the lands just beyond the Appalachia in central Kentucky. I-71. It is a road I know well, having traversed it as many as a dozen times or more per year doing my master’s work that took me from northeast Ohio to central KY for school. It is a road that gives a glimpse into the past, present, and future of the nation, as it quickly moves from some of the densest urban areas to some of the least populous, early 1900s farm-esque around. Sometimes, all this takes place in just a few minutes or miles...

    Too many farmer's markets?

    By John Moody

    Published Jun 4, 2018

As I mentioned a few weeks back, some segments of ag are in the midst of challenges and changes. CSAs (community supported agriculture) are one area... In 1730, when city planners designed the city they designated a 120 square foot lot in the center of town as a public market place giving birth to the Lancaster Central Market... It didn’t seem to matter much what part of the country or economic region the markets were in as well... Sales at farmer’s markets in some areas and regions have been struggling...

Farmers in Wisconsin and surrounding states can submit grant proposals for funding to explore sustainable agriculture practices.

Projects should emphasize research or education and demonstration.

The USDA North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR SARE) will accept Farmer-Rancher grant applications until December 1, 2022.

The factors affecting chemical use in Aquaculture in the Central Coast Region of Vietnam

Authors: D.H. Bui, D.P.H. Bui and Q.T. Pham

Using the econometric approach of Ordinary Least Squares, this study has identified the key factors affecting the use of inorganic chemicals in coastal aquaculture in South Central Vietnam. These factors included the amount of training and support policies for extensions and the level of participation by cooperative groups in aquaculture activities. The greatest impact factor to the use of inorganic chemicals in aquaculture was “Fishery Extension Support Policy Group” by ?0.747. This value means that if the remaining variables do not change and this variable increased by one unit (meaning that an increasing in support including capital, machinery, the consultants, seed for aquaculture farmers), the use of chemicals in aquaculture sector will decrease 0.747 units. In contrast, the level of “participation in cooperative groups” in aquaculture in Vietnam was directly proportional, extended to the use of inorganic chemicals with a coefficient by 0.706. This result suggests that households participating in “cooperative group” aquaculture will tend to use more 70.6% inorganic chemicals than non-participating households. This suggests the need for corresponding policies to limit the usage of inorganic chemicals and antibiotics in aquaculture in the region in order to achieve the development goals of green growth and sustainability.
