Cover Crop Corner: Part 2 Cover Crop Economics: Long-term gains through holistic improvements

By Feed the Soil, Feed the World

    Published Oct 13

In part two of this two-part series on the economics of cover crops, we explore how a holistic approach to taking care of resources comes with long-term gains. By GO SEEDThere are no “quick fixes” when it comes to the health of soils, the benefits take more than overnight to show up. While it takes time and deliberate care to learn how to enhance resources holistically within your own system, the general principles are relatively simple and can be significant cost savings. “Soil is the natural capital of the land,” explains Dr Shannon Cappellazzi, GO Seed Director of Research. “By making the investment in soil health, not only are you making an impact on all of the downstream ecosystem services that are related to soil functions, you are also regenerating the land for continued agricultural production...

How Cover Crops Affect Your Fertilizer Strategy

    By Laura Barrera

    Published Jun 29, 2018

When it comes to cover crops and nutrient management, a lot of the focus is on what cover crops can do for soil fertility. Depending on the species being used, they can prevent leftover nutrients from running off into waterways or even produce some fertilizer for future crop use. But how should farmers adjust their fertilizer practices for their cash crops following cover crops? John Pike, a contract researcher and cover crop specialist for the Zea Maize Foundation and IL Sustainable Agriculture Partnership, and a former Research Agronomist at the University of Illinois at Dixon Springs Research station, says that while there are some nuances that need to be planned for, the basic principles of soil fertility and crop management are much the same... ”Nitrogen timing is criticalFarmers first need to consider the benefits of the cover crops they’re seeding and how they may affect their fertilizer plans... “Like any new technology, there is a lot to learn, and while cover cropping is not a new concept at the basic levels, maximizing the benefits of better cover crop systems is leading many farming operations to understand their production systems at a higher level, resulting in profitability and improved resource conservation...

"Cover crops are often part of a suite of conservation practices that comprise a farmer’s soil health management system. Other conservation practices, such as no-till farming and a written nutrient management plan, are more common on fields with cover crops than on fields without cover crops."
