How Brazilian Big Agriculture is Destroying the Brazilian Amazon

    By Maria Dampman

    Published Apr 4, 2018

The rampant deforestation of the Amazon began in the 1970s when the government of Brazil determined they needed to build over 9,000 miles of roads help integrate the rainforest with the populated bordering areas. As the deeper parts of the rainforest became accessible, development of these lands became possible, and once begun, continued at an alarming rate. Farmers, loggers and cattle ranchers cleared forest to create grazing land as well as to grow highly profitable crops like soy. In the beginning, no one was aware of the disastrous environmental consequences of destroying the forest often described as “the lungs of the Earth... As more Eastern cultures adopt a Western diet, the need for beef products has increased exponentially...

    Million Dollar Dirt

    By Amanda Allworth

    Published Jul 10, 2018

Dirt. It’s arguably a farmer’s most valuable natural resource. But what makes some soils more productive than others? That’s a complicated question to answer, but we do know that the healthiest soils share some common characteristics. While some of these are difficult to change, there are management practices you can employ to improve soil quality... Research conducted by the National Association of Conservation Districts and Datu Research found that using cover crops and/or no-till can result in an economic return of over $100 per acre as a result of less fertilizer and erosion repair costs and higher yields...

    Understanding Agrilend and the MERCOSUR

    By Robert Morgan

    Published Jun 17, 2018

The MERCOSUR is a powerful dominant force in international global markets and originally began with its Members;Bolivia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina as direct Member Countries, in South America, however it is rapidly gaining momentum by its cooperative Associate Member Countries in Central America and its international prowess relies on its ability to cooperate confidential public private initiative agreements with cooperating countries desiring to do corporate business attached with attractive concensions by partnering with MERCOSUR for the sake of obtaining finance, capital, agricultural export or import, natural resources and as an exchange for favor. It is however important to distinguish its Members current state and its Associate Members current state. The MERCOSUR is a consummation of a likely, if not inevitable global economic marriage... Most of the population lives near the continent's western or eastern coasts while the interior and the far south are sparsely populated. The geography of western South America is dominated by the Andes mountains; in contrast, the eastern part contains both highland regions and large lowlands where rivers such as the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná flow...

    Too many farmer's markets?

    By John Moody

    Published Jun 4, 2018

As I mentioned a few weeks back, some segments of ag are in the midst of challenges and changes. CSAs (community supported agriculture) are one area. Three legal and legislative items to keep an eye on

    By John Moody

What a week! Summer is in full swing after no spring in these parts. But the growing season isn’t what has taken center stage of late. A number of major legal and political changes are happening or may happen that are going to impact the food and ag sector of the economy.
