    Retirement Tax Planning for Farmers

    By Tyler Davis

    Published Mar 15, 2020

The decision to retire is often met with either enthusiasm or fear. Some farmers are counting down the days until retirement, and others are scared to retire because they aren’t sure what they will do without work. Many farmers who have worked so hard for decades have not developed any hobbies outside of farming. The decision to retire is often one of uncertainty... The first question that farmers must answer is, What do I want to do in retirement? What type of lifestyle does the farmer want to live? Do they want to continue to live modestly and in a rural area, or are they ready to cash in on a lifetime of hard work, move to the beach, and go fishing every day? Having a solid answer to this question is a pre-requisite to evaluating the financial and tax issues that follow...

Call for Proposals: Sustainable agriculture, Sustainable fishing, Biodiversity conservation, Sustainable Technologies

The Fondation Ensemble is seeking proposals from eligible organisations for its Programme Fund.

    Focus Sectors
Sustainable agriculture: In this focus sector, the Foundation aims to participate in addressing the environmental, social and economic challenges involved in a sustainable agriculture that focuses on the needs of the world’s poorest populations. The projects fund are in areas where the environment is most degraded or under greatest threat, and where local populations are most at risk.
Sustainable fishing: In this focus sector, the Foundation funds sustainable fishing projects that closely link protection of fish stocks and conservation of ecosystems with protection of marine species and the well-being of local populations. The actions undertaken help the beneficiary families and future generations to ensure their own food security and to find new local income-generating activities.
Biodiversity conservation: In this focus sector, the Foundation funds terrestrial and marine biodiversity conservation projects (fauna and flora) that bring sustainable social, economic and environmental benefits, particularly for the poorest communities and that contribute to protecting threatened species.
Sustainable Technologies: In this focus sector, the Foundation provides particular support for the development of innovative technologies that the very poor can afford, and which improve their access to energy, to decent living conditions and to more environmentally-friendly means of production. Innovative technologies based on a sustainable development model can generate microenterprises within communities.

The project activities are undertaken in one of the Foundation’s six focus countries: Ecuador, Peru, Mozambique, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

Dateline for submission: 1 February 2019

Are Consumers Willing to Pay More for Sustainable Products? A Study of Eco-Labeled Tuna Steak

Authors: Guzhen Zhou, Wuyang Hu and Wenchao Huang

A high demand for seafood leads to overfishing, harms the long-term health of seafood stocks, and threatens environmental sustainability in oceans. Sustainability certification is one of the major sustainability movements and is known as eco-labeling. For instance, in the tuna industry, leading tuna brands have committed to protecting sea turtles by allowing the tracing of the source of their tuna “from catch to can.” This paper relies on an Internet survey on consumers from Kentucky conducted in July 2010. The survey investigates household-level tuna steak (sashimi grade) consumption and examines consumer preferences for eco-labeling (“Certified Turtle Safe” (CTS) in this study) while mimicking individuals’ seafood procurement processes. A random parameter logit model is utilized, and willingness-to-pay measures are calculated based on model estimation results. It was found that respondents on average preferred turtle-safe-labeled tuna steak and were likely to pay more for it; however, they were less likely to purchase wild-caught species, and insignificant results were found for pre-frozen. Moreover, significant heterogeneities were found across individuals regarding tuna steak purchases. The findings indicate evidence of public support for environmental friendliness, particularly with regard to eco-labeling.
