  • Grazing Systems: What types are there?

    By Robert Malmstrom

    Published Mar 9, 2020

A grazing system, when done correctly, can assist rangeland managers in achieving management objectives. They can both boost production as well as reduce their overhead costs. Selection of the proper type of system depends on understanding the unique combination of different aspects that go into range management. Things like the topography, soil type, the particular animal involved have to be balanced in order to get the best results. Whether intended or not if you have animals grazing in a pasture then you already have a grazing system in place...

The Best Business Entity Structure for Farms

    By Tyler Davis

    Updated Jun 20, 2020

One of the most common questions I receive as a tax professional is “What type of business entity should I choose?” Most new business owners are overwhelmed at this decision and do not fully understand the differences between types of entities. This article will explain rules, filing requirements, and benefits of the main type of business entities: sole proprietorship, LLC, Partnership, S-Corporation, and C-Corporation. Each decision is dependent upon the facts & circumstances of the owner(s), but a thorough understanding of each business type is critical in making the correct entity decision. Sole Proprietorships:The easiest, quickest type of entity to set up is a sole proprietorship. A sole proprietorship is not separate from its owner...

Weed Control in Organic Soybean Farms

    By Vijayalaxmi Kinhal

    Updated Oct 24, 2020

Experts all agree that there is no silver bullet to control weeds in the organic cultivation of soybeans. Farmers need to use a combination of measures to keep weeds at bay in the short and long term... Weeds not only compete with soybeans for space, light, and nutrients, but they can also transmit diseases and pests, and cause problems during harvesting... Starting operations on farms with lower weed infestations is another possibility... The advantage of using microbes is that they are living organisms, which will survive and multiply in the field in succeeding crop cycles and continue weed-control...

How the small Farmer can Acquire more Farms using Leverage.

    By Robert Morgan

    Published Jun 13, 2018

Going Private and Leveraged BuyoutGoing private refers to the transformation of a public corporation into a privately held firm. A leveraged buyout (LBO), financed largely by borrowing, is the acquisition of the stock or assets of a public company by a small group of investors. The buying group may be sponsored by buyout specialists or by investment bankers. A variant of the LBO going-private transaction is the management buyout (MBO) in which a segment of the company is sold to its managers... Muscarella and Vetsuypens present data showing the pattern of leverage for a sample of 72 firms that were taken private in LBOs and returned to public ownership through stock offerings about three years later...

Value Added Products - The future for farms of all sizes?

    By John Moody

    Published Apr 9, 2018

Some sectors of the ag industry, especially dairy, are in a free fall, with our fellow farm friends hurting badly as low prices, consolidation, and other forces forcing many to sell off operations or even sell their farms... Yet some farms and farmers are are faring better than others, especially those who have incorporated direct to consumer or value added products into their operations. “ERS looked at Census of Agriculture data showing that 61 percent of farms with direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales in 2007 were in business under the same operator in 2012, compared with 55 percent of farms without DTC sales. In a comparison of farms across four size categories (defined by annual sales in 2007), farmers with DTC sales had a higher survival rate in each category. The difference in survival rates ranged from 10 percentage points among the smallest farms to about 6 percentage points among the largest...

Precision Farming Solutions for Weeds in Soybean Farms

    By Vijayalaxmi Kinhal

    Updated Sep 10, 2020

To use precision farming methods, we need Weed scouting systemsWeed management modelsPrecision weed control implementationThere are numerous methods and approaches used. Recommendations depend on the scale at which weed implementation will be carried out in soybean farms... (Source: Precision farming for weed management: techniques)A combination of computers, artificial intelligence (or decision-making algorithms), and machine learning analyze the images to identify the weeds... As it is possible to detect different species of weeds from drone images as well as sensors on application booms, species-specific herbicides can be used, reducing reliance on any single chemical... “Several weed sensing systems and precision implements have been developed over the last two decades,” says Dan Crummett...

Uruguay now is now investing in USA farms; Read Why.

    By Robert Morgan

    Published Jun 14, 2018

The MERCOSUR Member;Uruguay, with a much smaller landmass and population then either Brazil or Argentina has as the largest sector of its Agricultural production, principally producing Rice, Wheat, Corn, Barley, Livestock, Cattle and Fish, therefore contributing to the BLOC’s extensive Export Import Trade. Agrilend views Uruguay is set to experience a period of structurally lower growth in the coming years, as investment into expanding agricultural production and re-export capacity is tempered and foreign capital begins to flow into Argentina as the new Argentine government liberalizes its investment environment. Nonetheless, Uruguay will continue to outpace Latin America's average real GDP expansion as the country's middle class supports private consumption growth. Inflation will remain elevated over the coming years as the Banco Central Del Uruguay will not implement significant policy measures to stymie price increases... The good news for American Farmers especially in Cattle, Beef, Livestock, Milk, Dairy, and Cheese is that since China is pretty much buying all of the countries agricultural products at a pace far faster than it can produce Uruguay as well as Argentina and Brazil are seeking to invest in American farms to deliver this needed deficit quickly! All i can say is Amercian farmers should be singing moooooooooooooooo! For this is great news! For more information please contact me at robertmorgan@agrilend...
