1031 Exchanges and Farm Land: 5 Things that Landowners Need to Know

    By Tyler Davis

    Published Aug 2, 2019

A 1031 Exchange is a tax-deferred swap program in which farmers and others in the agriculture industry can participate. Farmland, vacant land, and certain agriculture assets are considered real estate assets under the Internal Revenue Code. As much, farmers and others are able to utilize Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 1031 in order to defer tax upon the disposition of farmland and acquisition of a “like-kind” piece of property. Section 1031 exchanges, which originally began in the 1920’s, have seen numerous tweaks and changes over the years to get us to the rules that are in place today... Given the complexity of the rules and the importance of meeting key dates in the transaction, using a seasoned expert in this area will assist in ensuring your transaction meets the proper qualifications...

Weed Control in Organic Soybean Farms

    By Vijayalaxmi Kinhal

    Updated Oct 24, 2020

Experts all agree that there is no silver bullet to control weeds in the organic cultivation of soybeans. Farmers need to use a combination of measures to keep weeds at bay in the short and long term. Soybean vs WeedsWeed control is the main problem in organic agriculture including in soybeans. It is more difficult to control weeds in soybeans because of their compact foliage, which takes longer than grain crops to produce an interlocking canopy that shades inter-row area. On the other hand, weeds have various natural traits that help them spread and establish...

    What’s the function of Mycorrhiza?

    By Darren Chan

    Published Jan 2, 2019

Introduction of MycorrhizaExcessive dependence on chemical fertilizers can result in the destruction of a large number of beneficial microbial communities in the soil and a decrease in soil activity. To improve the current soil ecosystem with serious damage and improve soil fertility, it is imperative to supplement soil beneficial microorganisms. The application of microbial fertilizer is the most direct and effective method. Symbiotic bacteria are fungi that need to grow with plants, but do not harm plants and they are beneficial to plant growth... However, once the plant has mycorrhiza, a large number of epithelial hyphae can cross the phosphorus-poor zone and absorb phosphorus, water and other nutrients from farther places, thus partially meeting the growth requirements of the plant...

How Brazilian Big Agriculture is Destroying the Brazilian Amazon

    By Maria Dampman

    Published Apr 4, 2018

The rampant deforestation of the Amazon began in the 1970s when the government of Brazil determined they needed to build over 9,000 miles of roads help integrate the rainforest with the populated bordering areas. As the deeper parts of the rainforest became accessible, development of these lands became possible, and once begun, continued at an alarming rate. Farmers, loggers and cattle ranchers cleared forest to create grazing land as well as to grow highly profitable crops like soy. In the beginning, no one was aware of the disastrous environmental consequences of destroying the forest often described as “the lungs of the Earth... farmers cannot meet...
