Compared to other south east Asian countries, Malaysia is positioned as the net rice importer and least rice production compared to Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines... Not only that, it also formed about 26 percent of the total caloric intake needed per person per day. This means that one household has to spend on average RM44 per month, totaling RM528 annually needed for rice consumption. The ChallengeIn Kedah, the paddy planting scene is not looking encouraging as the state government is trying to strike a balance between agricultural land and land for development[2]... In reality, there are many abandoned land in the outskirt areas of Kedah...

    New chance for Nematicides Market

    By Darren Chan

    Published Apr 29, 2019

Market InterpretationNematicides helps in securing crops from nematodes as well as various other soil-dwelling pests. This, subsequently, has actually driven the growth of nematicides market. The burden on the healthcare sector because of the large-scale existence of chronic illness has actually urged changes in customer behavior pattern. An upswing sought after for natural items is anticipated which is most likely to produce nematicides demand over the following number of years. Market Scenario and Key RestraintsThe longevity of pests has actually heightened the need for nematicides across the farming sector...

New Tools for Plant Genome Editing Developed

    By Isla Miller

    Published Sep 28

Recently, academician Liu Yaoguang's team from College of Life Sciences, South China Agricultural University, The State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-Bioresources, and Guangdong Laboratory for Lingnan Modern Agriculture, published a research paper entitled The ScCas9++ variant expands the CRISPR toolbox for genome editing in plants online in Journal of Integrative Plant Biology. This research uses optimized CRISPR/ScCas9++ new variants derived from Streptococcus canis to develop a wide-targeted plant genome editing and cytosine single-base editor, providing new opportunities for plant functional genomics research and crop genetic improvement research tool. At present, CRISPR/Cas genome editing technology has become an important tool for functional genomics research and crop genetic improvement... 2% with the most commonly used SpCas9 protein (Streptococcus pyogenes, recognizing NGG-PAM) and recognizes NNG-PAM with a wider targeting range, but its editing efficiency in animals and plants is low and difficult to promote for use. Previously, evolutionary-type ScCas9+ and ScCas9++ variants were obtained by replacing amino acids in the PAM-DNA interaction domain and loop motif of ScCas9, and showed high editing activity and a wide editing range in animal cells...

New progress has been made in the cloning and evolution of cold tolerance genes at booting stage in rice

    By Isla Miller

    Published May 27

Recently, new progress has been made in the cloning and evolution of cold tolerance genes at the booting stage of rice completed by the Institute of Grain Making, Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences in cooperation with China Agricultural University and other units, and the research result article Stepwise selection of natural variations at CTB2 and CTB4a improves cold duration adaptation domestication of japonica rice was published online in full in New phytologist (IF: 8... In this study, a new rice booting stage cold tolerance gene CTB2 was cloned, and the gradual selection of natural variants of CTB2 and CTB4a improved the cold adaptability of japonica rice... In this study, a segregating population was constructed using near-cold tolerance isogenic lines, and on the basis of linkage mapping, genome-wide association analysis was further performed using the booting stage cold tolerance phenotype of 54 japonica and 67 indica germplasm resources to mine a new cold tolerance gene CTB2... Under low temperature stress, CTB2 can maintain the permeability of cell membrane, protect pollen grain and pollen outer wall structure, and finally improve the cold tolerance of rice by affecting the contents of sterol glycosides and acetylated sterol glycosides. CTB4a is an important rice booting stage cold tolerance gene previously cloned by the team (Zhang et al...

New Findings about the Relationship between Fungi and Plant Roots

    By Isla Miller

    Published Aug 30

This mutually beneficial interaction promotes the ability of plants to absorb nutrients essential to growth. The more nutrients that plants naturally obtain, the less artificial fertilizers they need... In a study published in the journal PLOS Biology, researchers used the bright red pigment of beet roots, betaine, to visually track soil fungi as they settle on the roots of living plants... Sebastian Schornack, a researcher at the Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge and co-senior author of the paper, said: We didn't know what happened before, because without a precise microscope, we couldn't see it in living plants. ”To achieve their results, the researchers designed two model plants, a legume and a tobacco plant, so that when arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are present in their roots, they can produce highly visible beets Alkaline pigments...

The Future of Fruit Farming: MD2 Pineapple

    By Jenny Hoo

    Published Sep 13, 2019

Pineapple pineapple cultivation Of late, the talk of the town seems to be revolving around the planting of MD2 pineapple. The questions is, why is this MD2 pineapple so popular?Pineapple is known to contain highest amount of vitamin C among all various types of fruits. It also contains a fair amount of magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron and develops a bromelin, of which is a type of enzyme. First started back in 1961, a hybrid variety namely “73-114”, developed by Pineapple Research Institude (PRI) in Hawaii was found to be extraordinary and was taken to Costa Rica for its first trial industrial planting. The variety was later renamed MD2 to honour the wife of the then General Manager of the Maui Pineapple Company[1]...

1031 Exchanges and Farm Land: 5 Things that Landowners Need to Know

    By Tyler Davis

    Published Aug 2, 2019

In order for the taxpayer to defer taxes, they must identify the new property within forty-five days of the disposition closing date and close on the new “like-kind” property within 180 days of the disposition closing date. In order for the taxpayer to fully defer capital gains tax, they need to purchase an asset of equal or higher value... Certain rules and guidance allows for taxpayers to include any improvement costs on their new asset in the value calculation for deferral treatment... I have identified five items that all farmers and agriculture business owners should know, as follows:#1 – You’re allowed to do a 1031 Exchange on your Farmland Should you wish to sell your existing farm land and buy like kind property, this exchange should qualify for tax deferred treatment, meaning you don’t have to pay the tax currently... This means that agricultural personal property such as equipment, machinery, livestock, etc...

The Best Business Entity Structure for Farms

    By Tyler Davis

    Updated Jun 20, 2020

One of the most common questions I receive as a tax professional is “What type of business entity should I choose?” Most new business owners are overwhelmed at this decision and do not fully understand the differences between types of entities. This article will explain rules, filing requirements, and benefits of the main type of business entities: sole proprietorship, LLC, Partnership, S-Corporation, and C-Corporation. Each decision is dependent upon the facts & circumstances of the owner(s), but a thorough understanding of each business type is critical in making the correct entity decision... A sole proprietorship is not separate from its owner. This means that the owner of a sole proprietorship has all of the decision-making authority, but they also carry substantial risk...
