How international money wants to invest in American Farms.

    By Robert Morgan

    Published Jun 12, 2018

MERCOSUR, or “ The Common Market of the Southern Cone” was established in March of 1990 by the Treaty of Asuncion and was implemented to create a Common Agricultural trade export import market by its now four signatories ( Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia) Venezuela is no longer part of the BLOC and Bolivia has a rather divided influence in MERCOSUR’S role. It has succeeded its predecessor, LAFTA ( Latin American Free Trade Association) in both economic integration as well as unlimited agricultural capital funding and has evolved into a powerful international influence in trade, agriculture, finance, exports, imports, and tariffs with many allies of which desire and inherently depend on its scalability including the United Arab Emirates, The European Union and more recently The United States of America. Brazil and Argentina are the largest Member countries, in territory and population in South America and each have large as well as highly developed consumer markets... Its principal Agricultural products include Coffee, Soybeans, Wheat, Rice, Corn, Sugarcanes, Cocoa, Citrus, and Beef. The MERCOSUR is a powerful dominant force in international global markets and originally began with its Members;Bolivia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina as direct Member Countries, in South America, however it is rapidly gaining momentum by its cooperative Associate Member Countries in Central America and its international prowess relies on its ability to cooperate confidential public private initiative agreements with cooperating countries desiring to do corporate business attached with attractive concessions by partnering with MERCOSUR for the sake of obtaining finance, capital, agricultural export or import, natural resources and as an exchange for favor...

Have the challenges of farming changed?

    By Ray Bohacz

    Updated Nov 23, 2021

Have the challenges of farming truly changed much over the decades or have our expectations changed? Has the affluence of our nation since WWII impacted our perception of agriculture when compared to 70 years ago? Do we need/want more now to feel that we are successful? As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am sincerely interested in your thoughts on these questions. Thank you and please write as long a response as you deem necessary.

Colorado Start-Up Will Make Its New State-of-the-Art Crop Planning Tool Freely Available to Farmers Across U.S. and Internationally

Schneider says the only data needed to run his software are price and yield forecasts, production costs and some basic field information. The rest are what Schneider calls "management decision levers." That is, decisions under a farmer's control. The software does not upend what the farmer is planning to plant. Rather it suggests changes at the margins, but the results can easily be a 10 - 20% boost in profitability after only about an hour of use. It can also show farmers ways to use the least amount of working capital or water or any other critical input.

Opportunities and Challenges in Achieving Food Sovereignity in Indonesia in the Era of ASEAN Economic Community

ASEAN is in the process of creating a single market and production base which allow the free flow of goods, services, investment, skilled labor, and capital across the region. This innitiative indicates a major step toward the greater cooperation and integration among 10 ASEAN member states. Many international agencies claimed that, if ASEAN were one economy, it would be considered as the seventh largest in the world. Furthermore, if the growth trends continue, it could be the fourth largest economy by 2050.

The implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was officially launched in 1 January 2016. The AEC blue print mentions that economic integration covers 12 sector, namely food and beverage, fisheries, wood, rubber, furniture, automotive, logistics, shoes, textile, textile products, travel, and health industries. Currently Indonesia has fulfilled the agreement by applying zero tariff to most of our imported products from ASEAN, except rice (25% tariff) and sugar (5-10% tariff). On the other hand, one of the strategic goal on agricultural development in Indonesia is to achieve food sovereignity. The purpose of this note is to review opportunities, challenges, and strategies for Indonesia in achieving food sovereignity goals under AEC agreement.

UNCTAD forecasts that FDI inflows in Latin America and the Caribbean could decline by 10 percent in 2016, falling to $140–160 billion

UNCTAD forecasts that FDI inflows in Latin America and the Caribbean could decline by 10 per cent in 2016, falling to $140–160 billion. Macroeconomic conditions will remain challenging, with the region projected to slip further into recession in 2016. Weak domestic demand led by softening private consumption, coupled with the potential for further currency depreciation, will weigh on investment in domestic manufacturing as well as in the services sector. A further decline in the prices of the region’s principal export commodities will likely serve to delay investment projects in the extractive industry as well as crimp reinvested earnings.

The value of announced greenfield projects dropped 17 per cent from 2014, to $73 billion, led by an 86 per cent decline in the extractive sector in 2015. This largely accords with the capital expenditure plans of the region’s major State-owned oil companies – Petrobras (Brazil), Ecopetrol (Colombia) and Pemex (Mexico) – which also foresee a sharp reduction in their investment outlays in the medium term. Lower project announcement values were also registered in the services sector, due principally to a significant pullback in transportation and communications as well as in retail and wholesale trade.

Preliminary data for the first quarter of 2016 suggest that greenfield investments will continue to be weak, with the number of projects falling 19 per cent and their value sliding 18 per cent, compared with the same period in the previous year. M&A activity in the first part of 2016 was also well below the quarterly average in previous years. These trends notwithstanding, a number of factors point to an uptick in FDI inflows. For example, national currency depreciation may motivate the acquisition of assets in the region. Cross-border M&As in the first quarter of 2016 were up sharply (80 per cent), thanks to higher net sales in Brazil, Chile and Colombia, though the comparison is somewhat skewed by what was an extremely weak first quarter in 2015.

AfDB makes USD 9 million Equity Investment in Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria

The African Development Bank has approved a USD 9 million equity investment (approximately 12% of the fund’s capitalisation) in the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) to provide expansion capital to agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

FAFIN is a first-generation private equity fund that provides financial, capacity-building and technical assistance to commercially viable SMEs in the Nigerian agribusiness sector, through a unique value chain-centric approach, and using a combination of equity, quasi-equity and convertible loan instruments. FAFIN implements its strategy and constructs its portfolio through a bifocal lens consisting of the twin objectives of competitive financial returns and measurable positive social impact.

The Fund is jointly sponsored by the German KfW Development Bank and the Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD). The Fund Manager is Sahel Capital (Mauritius) Limited, a fund management firm incorporated in Mauritius in 2013.

The project is expected to deliver strong development outcomes from (i) household benefits and employment through the creation of a large number of jobs and the provision of certain agricultural products; (ii) positive gender and social effects through the implementation of out-grower schemes and supporting rural development; and (iii) private sector development through alleviation of financial constraints faced by agribusinesses and enhancing agricultural value chains.
