It also contains a fair amount of magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron and develops a bromelin, of which is a type of enzyme... Ten Ways to Increase Your Farm's Profits This Year

    By AgFuse Exclusive Content

    Updated Dec 30, 2019

Part 9: Focus on Efficiency Over Growth Farming is a capital-intensive industry. It takes a lot of capital and machinery to produce a crop... Often, that approach does grow their profits, but it also increases the farmers’ capital expenditures. Furthermore, if this new growth isn’t funded with current working capital, then the cost of capital can negate the profit seen from pure growth... Why Efficiency Matters More Than Size In most cases, gains in efficiency cost little to nothing compared to the increased capital requirements to add more land...

Is it the end of the line for the large feedlot in America?

    By North American Ag

    Published Jul 26

Vice President of Government Affairs at the National Cattleman’s Beef Association Ethan Lane has been vocal about his opposition to the Farm System Reform Act... The Act would prohibit the construction of new large feedlots, the expansion of those currently operating, would require all large feedlots to cease operating by 2040, but also it establishes a voluntary debt forgiveness program that provides feedlot owners with grants to pay off their debts & transition to raising pasture-based beef. The Animal Welfare institute promotes their support for the Farm System Reform Act saying, “The current model of industrial animal agriculture that dominates our food system is unsustainable... Last week Lane gave a response to the bill stating the contrast between the two proposals put forward, saying the second “is the kind of broad, jumbled mess you get when you’re more focused on Twitter and talking points than the sound legislating rural Americans need. ”Visit National Cattlemen’s Beef Association | North American Ag or to learn more...

Impact of Final Opportunity Zone Regulations on Farmers & Agribusinesses

    By Tyler Davis

    Published Jan 8, 2020

The first benefit is that a taxpayer can defer the tax on their capital gains until 12/31/2026. If a taxpayer has a capital gain in 2020 that they reinvest into a Qualified Opportunity Zone Fund, the taxpayer does not have to pay tax on that gain until 2026. The second benefit is the ability to reduce the amount of tax paid on the initial capital gain used to fund the investment... To receive the maximum reduction of tax on the capital gain, taxpayers needed to fund their opportunity zone investment by December 31, 2019... If the net is a gain, then the gain is capital...

    The Story of AgFuse

    By Pat Rogers

    Published Jul 16, 2018

In July of 2014, I sat in the audience on the last day of the InfoAg Conference in St Louis. It was my first major farm conference trip outside of somewhat local events that had been put on near my home in the Carolinas... By attending that conference, I was afforded the opportunity to hear some of the smartest minds in agriculture speak on and demonstrate how precision farming was going to change the industry as we knew it... Agriculture is a very unique industry for a number of reasons, but one of the more unique paradigms of ag is that it is an industry built upon the generous sharing of information among its participants... You’ll be able to interact with neighbors to see what they think are the best soybean varieties for your county and you’ll also be able to read national marketing experts’ views on how Chinese tariffs will affect those same soybeans...

How important is increasing cover crop mass when timing burndown?

    By Anonymous Member

    Published Apr 8, 2020

Is there a lot of benefit to letting cover crops grow a tremendous amount of vegetation prior to terminating them or do the risks of increased planting difficulty make it not worth the trouble?

Colorado Start-Up Will Make Its New State-of-the-Art Crop Planning Tool Freely Available to Farmers Across U.S. and Internationally

Schneider says the only data needed to run his software are price and yield forecasts, production costs and some basic field information. The rest are what Schneider calls "management decision levers." That is, decisions under a farmer's control. The software does not upend what the farmer is planning to plant. Rather it suggests changes at the margins, but the results can easily be a 10 - 20% boost in profitability after only about an hour of use. It can also show farmers ways to use the least amount of working capital or water or any other critical input.

Opportunities and Challenges in Achieving Food Sovereignity in Indonesia in the Era of ASEAN Economic Community

ASEAN is in the process of creating a single market and production base which allow the free flow of goods, services, investment, skilled labor, and capital across the region. This innitiative indicates a major step toward the greater cooperation and integration among 10 ASEAN member states. Many international agencies claimed that, if ASEAN were one economy, it would be considered as the seventh largest in the world. Furthermore, if the growth trends continue, it could be the fourth largest economy by 2050.

The implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was officially launched in 1 January 2016. The AEC blue print mentions that economic integration covers 12 sector, namely food and beverage, fisheries, wood, rubber, furniture, automotive, logistics, shoes, textile, textile products, travel, and health industries. Currently Indonesia has fulfilled the agreement by applying zero tariff to most of our imported products from ASEAN, except rice (25% tariff) and sugar (5-10% tariff). On the other hand, one of the strategic goal on agricultural development in Indonesia is to achieve food sovereignity. The purpose of this note is to review opportunities, challenges, and strategies for Indonesia in achieving food sovereignity goals under AEC agreement.

UNCTAD forecasts that FDI inflows in Latin America and the Caribbean could decline by 10 percent in 2016, falling to $140–160 billion

UNCTAD forecasts that FDI inflows in Latin America and the Caribbean could decline by 10 per cent in 2016, falling to $140–160 billion. Macroeconomic conditions will remain challenging, with the region projected to slip further into recession in 2016. Weak domestic demand led by softening private consumption, coupled with the potential for further currency depreciation, will weigh on investment in domestic manufacturing as well as in the services sector. A further decline in the prices of the region’s principal export commodities will likely serve to delay investment projects in the extractive industry as well as crimp reinvested earnings.

The value of announced greenfield projects dropped 17 per cent from 2014, to $73 billion, led by an 86 per cent decline in the extractive sector in 2015. This largely accords with the capital expenditure plans of the region’s major State-owned oil companies – Petrobras (Brazil), Ecopetrol (Colombia) and Pemex (Mexico) – which also foresee a sharp reduction in their investment outlays in the medium term. Lower project announcement values were also registered in the services sector, due principally to a significant pullback in transportation and communications as well as in retail and wholesale trade.

Preliminary data for the first quarter of 2016 suggest that greenfield investments will continue to be weak, with the number of projects falling 19 per cent and their value sliding 18 per cent, compared with the same period in the previous year. M&A activity in the first part of 2016 was also well below the quarterly average in previous years. These trends notwithstanding, a number of factors point to an uptick in FDI inflows. For example, national currency depreciation may motivate the acquisition of assets in the region. Cross-border M&As in the first quarter of 2016 were up sharply (80 per cent), thanks to higher net sales in Brazil, Chile and Colombia, though the comparison is somewhat skewed by what was an extremely weak first quarter in 2015.

AfDB makes USD 9 million Equity Investment in Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria

The African Development Bank has approved a USD 9 million equity investment (approximately 12% of the fund’s capitalisation) in the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) to provide expansion capital to agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

FAFIN is a first-generation private equity fund that provides financial, capacity-building and technical assistance to commercially viable SMEs in the Nigerian agribusiness sector, through a unique value chain-centric approach, and using a combination of equity, quasi-equity and convertible loan instruments. FAFIN implements its strategy and constructs its portfolio through a bifocal lens consisting of the twin objectives of competitive financial returns and measurable positive social impact.

The Fund is jointly sponsored by the German KfW Development Bank and the Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD). The Fund Manager is Sahel Capital (Mauritius) Limited, a fund management firm incorporated in Mauritius in 2013.

The project is expected to deliver strong development outcomes from (i) household benefits and employment through the creation of a large number of jobs and the provision of certain agricultural products; (ii) positive gender and social effects through the implementation of out-grower schemes and supporting rural development; and (iii) private sector development through alleviation of financial constraints faced by agribusinesses and enhancing agricultural value chains.
