But a lot of the pests damaging our crops are actually native to our regions and already have local natural enemies... Inoculative augmentation is when a release of beneficial is made on the crops once during the season and the control is ensured for the rest of the season by their offsprings... Numerous pests are successfully controlled within fields growing a wide variety of crops around the world. Crop examples include permanent crops such as vineyards, citrus and apple orchards as well as annual crops such as strawberry, cannabis, and corn... We will discover that while augmentative biological control was historically known mainly for greenhouse vegetable and floriculture production, these new technics open new opportunities for outdoor crops such as trees, orchards, vineyards, etc...

She works with some of the main crops of the Salina Valley, California such as leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, and artichoke... Gina Bella Colfer in a Salinas Valley fieldDuring our conversation, we touched upon various topics such as conservation biological control, the use of beneficial insects in vegetable crops, and the promotion of soil health... That is why, as a company, we really encourage permanent cover cropping in tree orchards and vineyards and strip habitat in row crops,” comments Gina... ” The promising opportunities for biocontrol in outdoor vegetable row cropsIn vegetable row crops like lettuces, some growers are having major issues with thrips that can transmit a virus called impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV)... As Gina explains, “I think a lot of conventional growers don’t realize that we see fewer insect pressures in organic than on conventional crops...

Animal damage to ag crops is a significant issue. How significant? How is a over billion dollars per year? “The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated that losses to field crops, vegetables, fruits, and nuts exceeded $765 million USD in 2001... “Deer damage to apple trees in commercial orchards is a major problem for growers in Maryland and surrounding states. The use of dogs contained within Off-Limits Crop Protection Systems has been shown to be an effective way to reduce deer damage in orchards in New York State... For smaller operations, especially vegetable growers, orchards, tree stock (or tree establishment), nurseries, or operations with similar crops and the like that are 15 acres or under, dogs are probably the lowest cost solution to mitigating deer damage...

What is Subsurface Drip Irrigation?Subsurface Drip Irrigation (SDI) is a way of irrigating crops through plastic tubes placed under the soil surface. The tubes have droplet emitters with even spacings, similar to the drip system located on the soil surface... In the United States, SDI is widely used to irrigate annual crops; elsewhere, the irrigation system is popularly used for orchards and other perennials... These methods, including SDI, have improved production and yield in scientific experiments for various crops... Smith and Riley (1992) [1] observed lower levels of corn earworm damage in crops with controlled irrigation...

Are CSAs still a viable business model for small farms? In the early 2000s, we hit a heyday for local farm and foods. Works by numerous authors created a resurgence in interest among consumers for “food with a face” - locally grown, seasonal, direct from the farm. What had been a mostly niche movement starting the 1980s that had limited appeal into the 90s took off in the 2000s... Share sizes are also far more flexible, and many farms now offer shares that focus on particular foods, crops, or other products they produce... A vegetable farm will partner with a pastured meat operation, a honey farmer, and an orchard and maple syrup operation to both create a longer CSA season and greater value for their members...

Plants prefer both not too much and not too little, unless you happen to be growing rice or a few other specialty crops! Depending on what you are growing, design can make a big difference to dealing with overly wet conditions. Raised beds are especially useful for early season crops that may face excessive moisture coming out of winter... We have rarely had to irrigate in past springs, but this year are looking at not just a significant loss on a number of crops, but a big electric bill from the additional well use this spring has required... Saving a crop - low tech approaches It has been a bruiser of a year for brassicas and many other cool season crops in our area... Soil temperatures have risen 4-6F in the past week. This has signaled these Chelan #cherry buds to swell... We are going to take a look at a few different ways we approach the profit question on our farm, along with how scale of enterprise and other factors can impact the profitability of different crops, in both good and bad ways... If you can turn over three to six other, fast growing crops in the same space during those five months, while their prices all may be lower, your total profit may end up being much higher than with ginger... Other spaces are dedicated to faster turnover crops at scales we can move with little infrastructure or storage expense. The two crops work together, since if we planted too much more of the fast growing stuff, we would need to scale up to a walkin or other refrigeration, lowering our profits and forcing us to increase our scale to make full use of such infrastructure and improvements... An apple orchard we work with has over the years gone to great lengths to diversity their orchard into over two dozen varieties of apple trees...

And if you plan on seeding your cover crops after your crops are off, you have the added challenge of trying to get them seeded in a timely manner... It leads to the question: Is it ever too late to seed cover crops? The short answer: It depends... The General Manager of cover crop seed company Future Generation Ag explains that your weather conditions, location, the number of acres you have, the species of cash crop you’re coming from and going to, as well as equipment, all play a role in determining whether it’s too late to get your cover crops seeded... “It’s never too late to plant cover crops, but if you wanted the benefit in the fall and early winter, then it’s too late,” he says... Leanne Dillard recommends growers who are using cover crops for forage get their covers seeded before Christmas...
