To get the perspective of an agricultural products distributor on organic farming, I reached out to Gina Bella Colfer, who is the key account manager for organic agriculture for the well-known fertilizer, plant protection, and other agricultural inputs company Wilbur Ellis... Gina has extensive knowledge of organic vegetable crop production systems, and one of her primary roles is to help Wilbur Ellis’ salespeople who work in organics to better understand the most effective methodologies and products. During her career, she has also helped develop organic fertility products tailored for soil health... These practices are not only relevant for organic growers, but also for conventional farmers wishing to improve their crop health and long term profitability... Growing it:In early 2019, I attended a presentation on South Carolina hemp production because I was curious to see for myself what others’ experiences were growing and marketing their hemp crops... What about organic hemp? Since one cannot use pesticides on hemp at this time anyway, it may be better suited for organic production. However, organic production provides its own challenges for any crop. Plus, to carry the label “organic”, the land the item is produced on has to be certified organic by being out of conventional agricultural production for three years... In the last few years, hemp was a government-regulated specialty crop...

In the application of agricultural production, chitosan oligosaccharides not only make crops grow better and robust, but also has obvious effects in stress resistance and pest resistance. Numerous studies have shown that chitosan oligosaccharides can induce broad-spectrum resistance, enhance the plant’s own defense ability, inhibit the growth of a variety of plant pathogenic microorganisms, and it is non-toxic and can be microbial degradation, and will not pollute the environment. This makes it an important role in agricultural production as a new type of green production... Higher organic content makes it easy to continuous cropping... Looking at planting triticale with hairy vetch and cow peas for a cover crop next year for a cash crop or corn to be planted late May 2021 using a roller crimper to terminate the cover crop before plant. It’s October 18th, I won’t be able to plant until the 22nd. Night time temps have fluctuated from mid 30s to high 20s no consistency yet. Some nights stay closer to 40. Highs are in the 70s and 80s. Am I too late for any of my covers? Any suggestions on planting rates? Will triticale terminate properly if I follow the method used for Rye, waiting until the entire field is dropping pollen?
