  • What Farmers Need to Know About Mycorrhizae

    By Laura Barrera

    Published Nov 2, 2018

If someone asked you, “How do plants take up the water and nutrients they need?” you’d probably tell them through the roots. But did you know that for many crops, those roots aren’t working alone? That’s because most plant species associate with mycorrhizal fungi. What is mycorrhizal fungi? University of Alberta biological scientist JC Cahill says that mycorrhizas are actually the interaction between a fungus and a plant. Although there are many different types of mycorrhizae, the only one crop farmers need to be concerned about is arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), as 65% of plant species associate with it... Some weeds, such as lambsquarters and pigweed, are also non-mycorrhizal — another reason why preventing and controlling weed infestations like palmer amaranth is so important...

20 Years Later: What Roundup Ready Crops Taught Us About Weed Management

    By Amanda Allworth

    Published Aug 21, 2018

It’s been over two decades since the first Roundup Ready crops were planted in commercial fields. At the time of introduction, the technology was revolutionary for farmers, who found a highly effective and convenient chemistry to control a broad spectrum of weeds... 1186/s12302-016-0070-0Recently published research by scientists at Kansas State University found that glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth plants had generated many copies of the gene that glyphosate targets... Palmer amaranth can grow 2 to 3 inches per day under favorable conditions... Purdue University and the University of Illinois are two institutions that offer resistance testing for weeds including Palmer amaranth, waterhemp and giant ragweed...

    An Introduction to Augmentative Biocontrol

    By Thomas Grandperrin

    Published Apr 7, 2020

In the previous article in this series we discussed classical biocontrol, which is the practice of identifying the origins of pests found in local fields, then finding the natural enemies of those pests in their foreign origins and bringing the “enemy of my enemy” (otherwise known as “beneficials”) back from their homelands to local farms to renew old rivalries and help suppress pest populations. As we have seen, this strategy is usually coordinated, or at least regulated, by public organizations at a regional, national or even continental scale. But a lot of the pests damaging our crops are actually native to our regions and already have local natural enemies. The problem though is that the population of those control agents is often insufficient and on the decline, for various reasons, some of which we will discuss in an upcoming article... Inoculative augmentation is when a release of beneficial is made on the crops once during the season and the control is ensured for the rest of the season by their offsprings...

How Cover Crops Affect Your Fertilizer Strategy

    By Laura Barrera

    Published Jun 29, 2018

When it comes to cover crops and nutrient management, a lot of the focus is on what cover crops can do for soil fertility. Depending on the species being used, they can prevent leftover nutrients from running off into waterways or even produce some fertilizer for future crop use. But how should farmers adjust their fertilizer practices for their cash crops following cover crops? John Pike, a contract researcher and cover crop specialist for the Zea Maize Foundation and IL Sustainable Agriculture Partnership, and a former Research Agronomist at the University of Illinois at Dixon Springs Research station, says that while there are some nuances that need to be planned for, the basic principles of soil fertility and crop management are much the same. “It’s a matter of fine-tuning the cover crop system to fit the soils, climate and equipment that’s available in the operation that we’re talking about on any given day,” he says. “We’re talking about soil fertility and growing corn and beans and wheat or whatever the crop is, so approach it from a logical standpoint, one step at a time, to figure out the best system for the crops, soils and equipment you’re dealing with...

On the Offensive with Cover Crops

    By Pat Rogers

    Published Jan 24, 2018

In the past few years, we have made a concerted effort to increase the usage of cover crops and other conservation practices on our farm. I have learned a lot of lessons from this experience but one stands out above the rest. Being a good steward of the environment and aiming to produce high yields don’t have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, I would argue that if intensively managed, conservation practices should significantly enhance yields... a way to protect crop yields during dry spells, a way to protect soil from erosion and a way to shade out competing weeds like palmer amaranth...

How Farmers Conduct Their Own On-Farm Research to Improve Production

    By Laura Barrera

    Updated Mar 1, 2021

With last year’s season completed and this year’s yet to begin, now is a natural time to reflect on your farm’s performance and how you can improve in the future. One way to make your decision-making process even better is by conducting your own on-farm research. It’s a process the Hardwick brothers and Nick McMichen have gained tremendous value from using on their respective operations. Here they share how they got started, how they design their trials, and the tools and technologies they use to make it happen... That often springs research ideas, but he’ll also use networking platforms like AgFuse to see what other farmers are doing...

Precision Farming Solutions for Weeds in Soybean Farms

    By Vijayalaxmi Kinhal

    Updated Sep 10, 2020

The weed control measures used in soybean production need to be overhauled. The development of resistance in weeds has made current technology and management increasingly expensive and comes accompanied with heavy yield losses. Precision management solutions can reduce chemical use in several ways. Current Weed Management in SoybeansSoybean is important for the global economy as it is used as a source for oil and protein (for people and livestock) and as biodiesel. Soybean is the crop with the largest monoculture in the world and with 90% of it grown in Argentina, Brazil, the United States, China, and India...
