The establishment of viable business enterprises agro-processors, transport services, and so forth as a result of increased agricultural mechanisation in rural areas, is crucial to creating employment and income opportunities and, thereby, enhancing the demand for farm produce.     Interactions between Trees, Crops and Animals: Experiences in a novel Bioenergy-Livestock system in the UK

    Managing the interactions between trees, crops and animals is an on-going challenge for agroforestry farmers. This paper reports on interactions between trees, crops and both wild animals and livestock in the establishment years of a novel UK agroforestry system combining short rotation coppice for energy production with livestock production. Our trials suggest that in the first six years there is no significant impact of trees on the alley crops (pasture and whole crop oat silage) in this system. Protecting the trees from livestock damage is essential in the early years; with cattle, our results show that it this is possible using a single stranded electric fence. Patterns of biodiversity varied between taxa; earthworm abundances were higher in the tree rows, which represent an undisturbed stable habitat, while the more active ground beetles were in greater abundances in the crop alleys which may reflect higher levels of prey within the crop.

    There is an increasing need of decision support systems for agriculture which is provided by is Precision Agriculture (PA). Through WSN, agriculture can be connected to the IoT, regardless of geographical differences. This approach provides real-time information about the lands and crops that will help farmers to make right decisions. The implementation of WSN in Precision Agriculture (PA) will optimize the usage of water, fertilizers while maximizing the yield of the crops and help in analyzing the weather conditions of the field.

    Soil moisture based irrigation test in a remotely monitored automated system

    The proposed paper aims at determining the most efficient soil moisture monitoring method in an intelligent remotely monitored system. The project also demonstrates the economic viability of an integrated system of production were water requirement, nutrients and pH are kept optimum automatically. The system is designed to overcome the challenges of water wastage, nutrition deficit, pH imbalance and leaching of nutrients. This system is powered by Solar System, controlled by Microcontroller and programmed using LabVIEW Software. The Microcontroller is connected GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) wireless network, which allows the system to communicate with the farmer remotely using a mobile phone. This proposed smart farming technology is environmentally friendly, efficient, cost effective and gives the farmer the power to control and monitor production in real time.

    The Design of Policy Instruments towards Sustainable Livestock Production in China: An Application of the Choice Experiment Method

    In face of gradual ecological deterioration, the Chinese government has been in search of more efficient and effective mitigation policies, aiming to promote the sustainability of livestock production. However, researchers and policy makers seem to neglect a key issue: pinpoint policies are the most important, which means niche targeting is the premise before any policy design, such that better knowing of the livestock farmers preference is prerequisite. This paper then analyzes this question using a method of choice experiment to elicit the farmers’ preference and valuation of livestock pollution control policy instruments at household-scale, medium-scale and large-scale farms. Five attributes (technology regulation, pollution charge, biogas subsidy, manure price, and information provisioning) were set as livestock pollution control policy instruments. In total, 754 pigs farmers from five representative provinces in China were surveyed, and the collected data were analyzed using random parameter logit models. The marginal substitution rates for attributes are estimated both with preference space approach and willingness to pay space approach. The results show significant heterogeneities in farmers’ preferences and valuations for livestock pollution control policy instruments within the three scales. All policy instruments effectively increased the manure eco-friendly treatment ratio for medium-scale farms, and household-scale farms showed little change in the manure eco-friendly treatment ratio under all policy instruments. Household-scale farms and medium-scale farms suggested the highest preference for the biogas subsidy policy, while large-scale farms suggested the highest preference for the manure price policy.

    Electricity production potential and Social Benefits from Rice Husk, a case study in Pakistan

    Pakistan has been experiencing energy crisis owing to its sole dependence on fossil fuels. Reduction in local fossil fuel reserves has led to an increase in their prices, thereby increasing the cost of electricity. Since the tariff remains the same, Pakistan is over-burdened with circular debts and observes a daily power shortfall of about 12–14 h. Being an Agra-economic country, many major and minor crops are produced and exported in large quantities. This results in a bulk of the agricultural waste which are not utilized. The waste can be utilized to meet the country’s energy demand while mitigating climate change and its impact. The study examines the electricity production potential and social benefits of rice husk in Pakistan. It is estimated in this study that if 70% of rice husk residues are utilized, there will be annual electricity production of 1,328 GWh and the cost of per unit electricity by rice husk is found at 47.36 cents/kWh as compared to 55.22 cents/kWh of electricity generated by coal. Importantly, the study will increase the awareness of the benefits of utilizing agricultural waste for useful products such as silica, with several social and environmental benefits such as a reduction of 36,042 tCO2e/yr of methane, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, improving the air quality, and providing 4.5 k new jobs. The paper concludes with the policy recommendations based on this study.

    A Step Towards Environmental Waste Management And Sustainable Biofuel (Ethanol) Production From Waste Banana Peelings

    Most nations, whether economically advanced or at different stages of development are facing two major challenges, energy crisis and proper waste disposal. In this paper a study has been done on environmental waste management and sustainable biofuel (ethanol) production from waste banana peelings. The peels of BASRAI variety of bananas are taken as they are rich in cellulose and are kept in hot oven at 338K and dried sample is taken and is dissolved in hot water for starch extraction through soxhlet extractor. This solution is treated with amylase enzyme for hydrolysis of starch to occur. Solution obtained is then subjected to fermentation process by inoculation of S.cerevisiae for 4-5 days at 300K which results in the production of ethanol. The ethanol formed is characterized by potassium dichromate method .The effect of pH; sugar content and rate of ethanol production were studied for 8 days. After extraction of starch the banana powder is than burnt with butane flame. We get potassium carbonate solution after gravity filtration. The residue left can be used as fertilizers.

Over the years, large timberland holdings have been responsible for sustaining the forest products economy through naval stores, lumber, and paper. Today the forest products industry contributes over $21 billion to the South Carolina economy and continues to grow stronger each year. As we look forward, one of the challenges the industry faces in South Carolina is the growing fragmentation of timberland ownership. Today, forested timberlands cover approximately two thirds of the state (over 12 million acres). Nearly 75% of this total is owned by non-industrial, private landowners. When you break this down further and look at the family owned timberland component, there are nearly 7 million acres across the State, of which over 3 million acres are composed of parcels of 50 acres or less. That’s a lot of acreage and tonnage spread across a growing segment of small forest landowners. Why is this happening? A recent study from Clemson University points to death (and subsequent sale or inheritance of property), urbanization, rising incomes and regulatory uncertainty as the main reasons for larger timber tracts being split into smaller parcels. “Across the South, where poverty and minority land ownership is prevalent, small landowners continue to struggle and large tracts continue to be sub-divided by heirs due to death, taxes and poor estate planning,” says Sam Cook, Executive Director of Forest Assets with the Natural Resources Foundation at NC State University, and recent recipient of the Henry Hardtner Award, which recognizes contributions to forest stewardship and sustainable forest management on non-industrial private lands. These smaller parcels are sometimes taken out of timber production or are not managed as effectively as they were in the past. In addition, the smaller landowner is often faced with the difficulty of selling timber because the smaller volumes are often too costly to harvest. “I own around 20 acres and when I decided to sell my timber, it was very difficult to find a buyer who was interested in harvesting my small acreage,” shares Joe Wheeler, a landowner in Chesterfield County. From the buyer perspective, it boils down to efficiency and profit margin. “Today’s loggers have more efficient and expensive equipment. Moving equipment between smaller tracts leads to a loss in productivity that puts pressure on already thin profit margins,” adds Jeff Tant with White Wood, Inc. “Even though there is no clear path to figuring out small tracts, one day a solution will be found and this will be a real plus to the industry.” One possible solution to smaller acreage parcels may be found online.     SEEDs of MORINGA 
    Seed of Moringa oleifera measures 1 cm in diameter with 3 papery white wings on angle .Fresh seeds retain viability of over 90 % within 2 months of seed production and germination declines beyond  this in ambient temperature .However the viability of seeds are prolonged in hermetically sealed container and cold storage . Seeds mature in about 3 months after flowering when pods turn brown in colour and dry pods split longitudinally along the 3 ridges of pod .The mature moringa seeds look dark brown and each pod produces around 20-26 seeds each weighing 0.35 grams to 0.12 grams .No of seeds per kilogram vary among different varieties of moringa between 3000 - 9000 .
           Moringa seeds germinate in about 7-30 days . When when temperature is around 10-15  degree Celsius it takes 25-30 days to germinate and 7-14 days when temperature is around 25-30 degree Celsius .
            The trees grown from seeds develop stout and deep tap roots
     and more spreading white tubular lateral roots providing strong anchorage and aiding in  more absorption of mineral nutrients and water and tolerance to drought . 
            The moringa seeds sprout and grow well in wide  PH range of 5.5 to 8 and medium to light texture soil .

    Precision Agriculture Techniques and Practices: From Considerations to Applications

    Internet of Things (IoT)-based automation of agricultural events can change the agriculture sector from being static and manual to dynamic and smart, leading to enhanced production with reduced human efforts. Precision Agriculture (PA) along with Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are the main drivers of automation in the agriculture domain. PA uses specific sensors and software to ensure that the crops receive exactly what they need to optimize productivity and sustainability. PA includes retrieving real data about the conditions of soil, crops and weather from the sensors deployed in the fields. High-resolution images of crops are obtained from satellite or air-borne platforms (manned or unmanned), which are further processed to extract information used to provide future decisions. In this paper, a review of near and remote sensor networks in the agriculture domain is presented along with several considerations and challenges. This survey includes wireless communication technologies, sensors, and wireless nodes used to assess the environmental behaviour, the platforms used to obtain spectral images of crops, the common vegetation indices used to analyse spectral images and applications of WSN in agriculture. As a proof of concept, we present a case study showing how WSN-based PA system can be implemented. We propose an IoT-based smart solution for crop health monitoring, which is comprised of two modules. The first module is a wireless sensor network-based system to monitor real-time crop health status. The second module uses a low altitude remote sensing platform to obtain multi-spectral imagery, which is further processed to classify healthy and unhealthy crops. We also highlight the results obtained using a case study and list the challenges and future directions based on our work.
