Ten Ways to Increase Your Farm's Profits This Year

    By AgFuse Exclusive Content

    Updated Dec 30, 2019

For example, if you grow legumes or peanuts, you may want to shy away from using a multi-species legume cover mix in those fields... On our farm, peanuts are the most profitable crop... Since peanuts can only be grown in a field once every four years, we know that we need at least 3,200 acres to maximize this scale... Cotton is a great crop to grow in combination with peanuts... So, that means that we will plan to have 1,600 acres of cotton and 800 acres of corn to go with the 800 acres of peanuts...

On the Offensive with Cover Crops

    By Pat Rogers

    Published Jan 24, 2018

In the past few years, we have made a concerted effort to increase the usage of cover crops and other conservation practices on our farm. I have learned a lot of lessons from this experience but one stands out above the rest. Being a good steward of the environment and aiming to produce high yields don’t have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, I would argue that if intensively managed, conservation practices should significantly enhance yields... For example, you do not want to plant legumes immediately prior to or behind a leguminous cash crop such as peanuts and soybeans because it could lead to disease issues...

How Farmers Conduct Their Own On-Farm Research to Improve Production

    By Laura Barrera

    Updated Mar 1

With last year’s season completed and this year’s yet to begin, now is a natural time to reflect on your farm’s performance and how you can improve in the future. One way to make your decision-making process even better is by conducting your own on-farm research. It’s a process the Hardwick brothers and Nick McMichen have gained tremendous value from using on their respective operations. Here they share how they got started, how they design their trials, and the tools and technologies they use to make it happen... Today he grows cotton, corn, peanuts, soybeans and wheat on 3,500 acres spread out over three counties in Alabama and Georgia, and conducts other on-farm studies like corn populations, nematodes in cotton, reduced tillage practices and cover crops...

Why Hemp Isn’t Going to Save the US Farmer (But How It Could)

    By The Crossover

In late 2018, a new farm bill was passed that legalized the production of hemp as an agricultural commodity while also removing it from the list of “controlled substances”. The Gold Rush of the modern farming era was on... In the mid-2000s, peanuts and switchgrass were new crops introduced to South Carolina (peanuts used to operate under a government quota/allotment program).
