How Yield Champions Use Cover Crops for Growing Higher Bushels

    By Laura Barrera

    Published 5 months ago

There are many factors that can influence corn yield. In fact, Fred Below, a plant physiologist at the University of Illinois, identified seven of them, which he dubbed the “Seven Wonders of the Corn Yield World. ”The seven wonders, ranked in order of most influence on yield, are:WeatherNitrogenHybridPrevious cropPlant populationTillageGrowth regulatorsWhile Below was referring to the cash crop rotation in the fourth wonder, some farmers are taking it one step further by seeding cover crops. The benefit of added crop diversity along with improvements to soil health is paying off, as some of these farmers are achieving the highest yields in the country... “Poultry litter brought us a long way back in the 90s,” he says...

Farmers Push for Trade, Not Aid

    By Kayla Hedrick

    Published 2 months ago

While the Chinese retaliatory tariffs and the resulting implications have been discussed among agriculture circles for months, perhaps the news that has caused the most conversation among farmers and the general public is the $12 billion aid package announced by President Trump in late July. What’s often missing in the conversation is that the $12 billion will not all come in the form of direct payments to farmers, nor go to one specific commodity. The package does, in fact, include direct payments to seven crops; but it also includes purchase of foods (fruits, nuts, meat, dairy) for food banks and nutrition programs and trade promotion to develop new markets... soy also has offices in China to provide on-the-ground market development assistance in everything from livestock and poultry production to aquaculture and soybean oil uses for cooking—all with the purpose of building the demand that accounted for 30 percent of our country’s annual crop... As a result, China is feeding more pigs and poultry and has become the world’s largest purchaser of soy – a crop that their government previously chose to import rather than grow...

Blockchain Technology: A Lifeline to Small-Scale Farmers

    By Gregory Heilers

    Published 6 months ago

Technology has been an integral part of agriculture since at least 5,000 years ago, documented through the use of ploughs in ancient Sumeria. Today, drone and GPS farming is old news. Still, some in the industry are unsure of the latest development to disrupt agriculture. From Chinese pork to Mexican mangoes, blockchain technology is already fostering direct marketing, improving traceability for compliance, reducing waste, and increasing profit margins... He enjoyed extensive hands-on involvement building his father’s grass-fed beef, breeding meat goat, and poultry farm in south-central Kentucky, which leverages the Internet to direct market (and should start looking into blockchain soon!)...

There is a stretch of interstate that runs crooked across the center of the US Midwest, connecting the rust belt region of northeast Ohio to the lands just beyond the Appalachia in central Kentucky. I-71. It is a road I know well, having traversed it as many as a dozen times or more per year doing my master’s work that took me from northeast Ohio to central KY for school. It is a road that gives a glimpse into the past, present, and future of the nation, as it quickly moves from some of the densest urban areas to some of the least populous, early 1900s farm-esque around... Pastured poultry was his first enterprise, inspired by Charlie’s fifteenth birthday gift - Joel Salatin’s “You Can Farm!” He also found four acres sufficient space to dabble in pasture raised beef, getting two steer's from Carterly to moo instead of mow the family's large plot of land...

Contract farming and public–private partnerships in aquaculture. Lessons learned from East African countries

    Publisher: FAO

This report presents the lessons learned from a project in four East African countries – Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda – focusing on youth and their agribusinesses. In Burundi and Rwanda, poultry and eggs were sold to retailers but were also provided to schools to alleviate malnutrition. In Kenya and Uganda the focus was on fish farming, raising finfish in cages and selling fingerlings. Partnering with private companies enabled young people to obtain business and technical knowledge in addition to a market for their produce.
