Small business financing refers to the means by which an aspiring or current business owner obtains money to start a new small business, purchase an existing small business or bring money into an existing small business to finance current or future business activity. Thousands of small businesses open their doors for the first time each year, but most of them will close doors again within five years. Those that do close usually do so because their owners failed to secure enough capital to finance the business. Sometimes this happens because they simply didn’t know where to go for funding. This doesn’t have to happen to your small business...

The U. S. agricultural industry finds itself at a precarious professional crossroads. Recent decades have resulted in a steady and significant decline in the number of working farmers in our country, for a variety of reasons. Fickle consumers, climate changes, growing conditions, and a slew of other factors beyond our control can prompt the closure of existing farms as well as deter would-be growers from launching a farming career...

The Keenans were up to their elbows in infrastructure projects, animal husbandry, and a burgeoning farmstay business, and needed help in a bad way. Balancing a post and beam, lime plaster home construction project against caretaking goats and chickens, while juggling four human kids to boot, left the Keenans with little time for their personal lives. So, the family turned to the outside world for help. As a recent college grad excited about farming, I responded to their advertisement, and soon found my way to the delightful Keenan homestead. For eight hours a day (tea breaks aside - we were in The Wirral, afterall), I helped the Keenans build their future home, steward their livestock, and even watched their children...

This article was initially published on The Wine Industry Advisor as part of a series on biological control and Integrated Pest Management written by UAV-IQ Precision Agriculture. Grape growers are facing increased threats from invasive insect pests. The issue with those non-native species is that there are often no naturally occurring enemies capable of controlling them and new Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols might take years to be developed, forcing growers to rely on broad-spectrum insecticides until more ecologically friendly alternatives are available... Kent has led several research projects on vine mealybugs and the development of ecologically-based insect pest management systems in vineyards and other perennial crops, such as almonds, pistachios, grapes, and stone fruit... ”Cover crops can bring some great benefits to the vineyard healthKent has done several research projects on the benefits of cover crops in vineyards with two postdoctoral researchers...

The rampant deforestation of the Amazon began in the 1970s when the government of Brazil determined they needed to build over 9,000 miles of roads help integrate the rainforest with the populated bordering areas. As the deeper parts of the rainforest became accessible, development of these lands became possible, and once begun, continued at an alarming rate. Farmers, loggers and cattle ranchers cleared forest to create grazing land as well as to grow highly profitable crops like soy. In the beginning, no one was aware of the disastrous environmental consequences of destroying the forest often described as “the lungs of the Earth... With more and more demands for additional infrastructure in order to continue uncovering new land, slowing or stopping the growth of these infrastructure projects is probably the best, although unlikely, way to stop the continued destruction of the rainforests...

There is a stretch of interstate that runs crooked across the center of the US Midwest, connecting the rust belt region of northeast Ohio to the lands just beyond the Appalachia in central Kentucky. I-71. It is a road I know well, having traversed it as many as a dozen times or more per year doing my master’s work that took me from northeast Ohio to central KY for school. It is a road that gives a glimpse into the past, present, and future of the nation, as it quickly moves from some of the densest urban areas to some of the least populous, early 1900s farm-esque around... Charlie had a right hand man he could trust to take care of some of the farm’s major operations, freeing him up for other farm projects and pursuits...

Technology has been an integral part of agriculture since at least 5,000 years ago, documented through the use of ploughs in ancient Sumeria. Today, drone and GPS farming is old news. Still, some in the industry are unsure of the latest development to disrupt agriculture. From Chinese pork to Mexican mangoes, blockchain technology is already fostering direct marketing, improving traceability for compliance, reducing waste, and increasing profit margins... Let’s take a look at specific blockchain projects emerging in the food sector today...
