cover cropping with triticale ,hairy vetch and cow peas late fall?

    By Brady Shortell

    Published Oct 18, 2020

Looking at planting triticale with hairy vetch and cow peas for a cover crop next year for a cash crop or corn to be planted late May 2021 using a roller crimper to terminate the cover crop before plant. It’s October 18th, I won’t be able to plant until the 22nd. Night time temps have fluctuated from mid 30s to high 20s no consistency yet. Some nights stay closer to 40. Highs are in the 70s and 80s. Am I too late for any of my covers? Any suggestions on planting rates? Will triticale terminate properly if I follow the method used for Rye, waiting until the entire field is dropping pollen?

What would you recommend for planting in a food plot for deer?

Pine Forest, so the soil is probably acidic. Located in North-East corner of Ohio. We are going to grind out the stumps, disc the soil, broadcast the seed and harrow it to finish.

Have the challenges of farming changed?

    By Ray Bohacz

    Updated Nov 23, 2021

Have the challenges of farming truly changed much over the decades or have our expectations changed? Has the affluence of our nation since WWII impacted our perception of agriculture when compared to 70 years ago? Do we need/want more now to feel that we are successful? As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am sincerely interested in your thoughts on these questions. Thank you and please write as long a response as you deem necessary.

My small scale farming equipment started out small to the extream on my 5.6 acre place with a big chunk of it being an old gravel pit that degraded not only the rest of mine but the neigbors' hay feilds pastures and fellow subdivision residencies. I had only a small push mower to beat the grasshoppers to the vegetation so it would turn into soil enhancement and a rototiller to atempt to work up a garden. My closest thing to livestock for the first 7 years was song birds who to begin with ate hundereds of pounds of then very cheap birdseed as the man fed food atracted them in hordes to help rid the place of the grasshoppers, as the birds ate grasshoppers they fertilized and gave much life for themselves and others to enjoy seeing, I put out only grasshopper control that was bird safe (organic aproved baits, and stuff that repelled animals) and only did so because I knew that the saying "It has to get worse before it gets better." very much applied. Most insect control just provides temporary relief and then after all to short of a time the insect problem is worse instead of better, especialy with control that kills natural enemies, and especialy especialy with grasshoppers. Grasshoppers and their larger relatives locusts numbers increase with dryness, food availability, plant diseases, drought stressed plants, and much more. They run rampent with out birds to control them naturaly, thus explaining both the starvation that ensued when the whooping cranes were hunted into extinction leading to the trouble with the Soix Nation, and to the destructivness of the bald locusts in the middle east. No matter how small you have to start out, you are not to small start out, no matter how slow you have to increase, you are not increasing to slow to increase and the small slow going you have will be more secure than starting to big and increasing to fast. Now, I have about 49 hen chickens and a few roosters despite culling 18 hens who were not strong enough to peck up raw fresh pumpkins as good as the others, 17 ducks, a registered bass pond with bass guaranteed to get pan sized every time (big plus so they don't eat my ducklings I put out), water right I irrigate from the pond to revegetat with several pumps I've been using and several more I got at a yard sale, a old tractor to pull an old horse drawn V-plow ditch digger that did various chores years past and now provides birds a place to perch while waiting to be put back to use as well as for the tractor to pull my gang reel mower cutting a nine foot wide swath doing what took several days in a few minutes even though I've been through a whole string of push mowers and love pushing them. Wild birds still get a lot of the grasshoppers but I don't do anything to control them but leave them for my fowl for the song birds and for the sandhill-cranes and Canada Geese which both now abound in the neigborhood, after all they seem quite rare with so many birds and plenty have turned into fertilizer already.
