  • The Story of AgFuse

    By Pat Rogers

    Published Jul 16, 2018

In July of 2014, I sat in the audience on the last day of the InfoAg Conference in St Louis. It was my first major farm conference trip outside of somewhat local events that had been put on near my home in the Carolinas. Frankly, my mind was blown with this experience. I had taken in more new information in a three-day period than I had in the previous five years combined... The proverbial rural coffee shops, which have always been hubs for local growers to network, are becoming a much lonelier place with each passing year...

Become more profitable by understanding and controlling transaction costs

    By John Moody

    Published Apr 24, 2018

Imagine your farm or business handles six hundred thousand dollars per year. The transactions vary in size from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars for the most part. Thousands and thousands of transactions. You know that your margins are tight - just a few percentage points separate you from being in the red or black... This is a fairly common mistake I see in helping small, value added and other businesses just getting started - in determining their pricing, profitability, and the like, they neglect to catch some of these small costs that go into getting a product to market - especially a large enough, viable market, a market that uses credit cards and shops online...

Role of the Virtual marketplace in facilitating trade challenges

    By Ammar Alshami

    Published Jan 17, 2019

A virtual marketplace is an online forum where many vendors come and sell their products to interested buyers through a third party website or app. The virtual marketplace is differentiated from an e-commerce site because it offers products from many vendors instead of single and from a buyer’s perspective; it provides more options for the single item. It is basically a non-physical bazaar that exists in spatial digital dimensions and provides one-click access to sellers and interested buyers. In this world of globalization and digitalization, time is considered precious commodity and diminishing physical constraints for shoppers and overhead costs for vendors are considered to be the elixir to carry forward the businesses in this new era... Fruits and Vegetable business in a virtual marketplace has totally eliminated the third party agents, physical space in a market or hefty rents of shops...

Big Data Driven Agriculture: Big Data Analytics in Plant Breeding, Genomics, and the Use of Remote Sensing Technologies to Advance Crop Productivity

Authors: Nadia Shakoor, Daniel Northrup, Seth Murray, Todd C. Mockler

    Journal Title: Plant Phenome Journal

    ISSN: 2578-2703 (Online)

Publisher: American Society of Agronomy; Crop Science Society of America

Plant breeding and agronomy are labor-intensive sciences, and the success of these disciplines is critical to meet planetary challenges of food and water security for the world’s growing population. Recent gains in sensor technology, remote sensing, robotics and autonomy, big data analytics, and genomics are being adopted by agricultural scientists for high-throughput phenotyping, precision agriculture, and crop-scouting platforms. These technological gains are ushering in an era of digital agriculture that should greatly enhance the capacity of plant breeders and agronomists. This report encompasses the priorities and recommendations that emerged from two USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)-funded Big Data Driven Agriculture workshops held on 26–27 Feb. 2018 in Arlington, VA. The objectives of the workshops were to bring together diverse subject-matter experts in the represented disciplines of plant breeding, machine learning, remote sensing, and big data infrastructure and analytics to (i) explore how large and comprehensive datasets in plant breeding, genomics, remote sensing, and analytics will benefit agriculture; (ii) discuss strategies for creating a successful field phenotyping campaign and to determine protocols for the collection and analysis of agricultural big data; (iii) consider how to best engage the broader community of public and private plant breeders and agronomists to determine additional challenges, make wider use of the data, and ensure application of standardized methods to other datasets; and (iv) generate a report describing cross-cutting short- and long-term funding needs for continued success in this domain.
