What Agribusiness Data Can and Can't Tell You

    By Marjorie Valin

    Published Aug 2, 2021

In agribusiness, big data means collecting everything. The temperature of the air as you plant, the moisture of the kernel as you harvest, the exact coordinate of each weed you find; it all gets absorbed into the digital cloud, analyzed, and processed. The end result is that we know what seeds grow the best in different conditions, statistically speaking... Anyone who has tended a farm knows the logistical nightmares behind getting everything planted in that sudden timeframe in spring, or trying to find the sweet spot in the fall for harvesting your crop... Data has become agribusiness' greatest asset and its Achilles heel...

Early Cover Crop Benefits: What Can You Expect in the First Year?

    By Laura Barrera

    Published May 17, 2018

In 1995, Pennsylvania farmer Steve Groff was speaking at an event when he asked the audience the question: Do cover crops pay off?His thinking at the time was that he had been no-tilling since 1982, and maybe if he no-tilled long enough, he wouldn’t need them. Ray Weil, a soil ecologist with the University of Maryland, happened to hear his question and approached Groff about doing a cover crop study on his farm... “If you have 3-foot deep topsoil in Illinois, you’re not going to see a dramatic difference in the soil as you would in maybe another soil that’s on a hillside, or rocky, or sandier,” he says... ” That mellowness is more noticeable with radishes because their deep taproot help alleviates compaction, but oats will also improve the soil tilth as its roots die in the spring... Management of the two is easy because they’ll both usually winterkill, so farmers don’t have to worry about having to deal with a living crop in the spring...

A Tale of Two Dairies - Part Two

    By John Moody

    Published Jul 12, 2018

As the sun set on the rolling hills of north central Pennsylvania, Jacob and Elizabeth Coleman found themselves in a similar spot - their small farm house, after a long day of farm work, with limited time and resources to figure out a way forward for their growing family... Winter gave way to Spring, and Spring to Summer... They started with forty springing heifers - new mother’s who had never been milked... But dairy was still their bulwark, what paid the bills, especially during off months when direct to consumer sales were slow or sluggish, like in the summer, or when expenses were high but there was little to sell, like early spring... In spring of 2017, Horizon held an in person meeting with the farmers to discuss the new contract and new rules for their suppliers...

How does KühlerZ offer Evaporative Cooling when the Humidity is High?

    By Core Cool Systems

    Published Sep 1, 2021

Have you ever experienced a day so humid that you find yourself dripping in sweat sitting in the shade on the front porch? Those days are brutal. Imagine how those days feel for your cows! They can't sweat the way we do to help regulate their body temperature... The dry air helps the added moisture evaporate and produces a chilling effect on the blood flowing just below the surface of her skin... The air won't be moving fast enough to cause a chill... Every day will feel like a cool spring day...

"Only 1 to 2 months ago the spring calving cows were calving, the temperatures were colder and the calving pastures were covered with muck and manure. Experience would say that you do not want to ask cow calf operators how calving is then, because the response would be less than objective, reflecting bone-chilling cold and not enough sleep.
"If you wait too long, perhaps until this fall, time will have mellowed most of the events and one soon has difficulty matching a calving season with particular problems. Plus it may be too late to make the necessary changes to reduce calving losses. Now is perhaps a better time to make a few notes on what to change for next year."

"Even though we had decent cover crop planting conditions last fall, you may have a field or two that didnt get seeded. You might be asking if itd be worthwhile to plant cover crops in the spring. There are certainly some scenarios that would make sense if you can work them into your cropping plans in the next few weeks." - @Steve Groff
