This Earth Day, let us remember those who are actually In The Arena

Farmers seem to be easy targets these days. We are bad because we grow GMO crops (so that we can spray less pesticides) and we are bad when we spray our crops with pesticides (but it’s non-GMO!). When it comes to public perception, fueled by pseudoscientists no less, it seems like we’re in a can’t win situation. However, for those of us who are actually “in the arena”, we know the truth about what we do and the impacts (both good and bad) our farming practices have on the earth... Cover crops, no-till, crop system diversity, variable rate fertilizing, even GMOs (yes GMOs!) are all contributing towards a sustainable farming industry...

I know this is a loaded question with many variables. The research I'm reading swings wildly with varying costs depending on everything from the number of days to feed costs to time of year. I'm reading anything from $3 to $5/day. What's your thoughts?

cover cropping with triticale ,hairy vetch and cow peas late fall?

    By Brady Shortell

    Published Oct 18, 2020

Looking at planting triticale with hairy vetch and cow peas for a cover crop next year for a cash crop or corn to be planted late May 2021 using a roller crimper to terminate the cover crop before plant. It’s October 18th, I won’t be able to plant until the 22nd. Night time temps have fluctuated from mid 30s to high 20s no consistency yet. Some nights stay closer to 40. Highs are in the 70s and 80s. Am I too late for any of my covers? Any suggestions on planting rates? Will triticale terminate properly if I follow the method used for Rye, waiting until the entire field is dropping pollen?

"The idea of using variable-rate tech has been growing over the past decade for planting, fertility and spraying, but what about harvest? That's the idea behind the tech Claas has brought into its Lexion machines and the company says variable rate harvesting offers increased efficiency for farmers."

"Throughout the years, precision agriculture has facilitated improvements to farming equipment, from auto-steer on combines to variable rate seeding on planters. These changes enhance functionality and allow growers to farm smarter and more efficiently.
"Sprayer technology has remained relatively unchanged for the last several years, leaving room for improvement. Recently, however, there have been several advancements in the area of precision technology on sprayers, looking to change the way that products are applied."

"Drones can capture multispectral images that can be used to set up fairly sophisticated variable rate prescriptions. But not every drone has to be that complicated, argues Thomas Haun."

"Haun, executive vice president with PrecisionHawk, says his company is interested in 'democratizing drones' in agriculture. As part of that effort, the company announced it has released what Haun calls a 'getting started' package – the Crop Scouting Package."

"Technology has spread through agriculture as well, most notably in the form of precision agriculture practices. For big-acre row crops, precision ag is much like the iPhone — just a normal part of daily farming. Variable rate applications, auto-steer, field mapping, and yield monitoring have become standard operating procedure for many of the commodity crop growers."
"While specialty crop growers have generally lagged behind in the adoption of precision agriculture practices, the segment is catching up fast. In the past few years, Florida growers have been adding various facets of the technology to their operations. Auto-steer is common and grid mapping is catching on, allowing more variable rate applications to be applied."

Trial on Pioneer 64T39, yield vs Population. The other on the right of the graph was a variable rate Rx that I tried.
The most farmers i konw plant this bean at very high populations, 350 to 450. For me that would have been some yield penalty..

A Smart Decision System for Digital Farming

Authors: Carlos Cambra Baseca, Sandra Sendra, Jaime Lloret and Jesus Tomas

    Journal Title: Agronomy

    ISSN: 2073-4395 (Online)

    Publisher: MDPI AG

New technologies have the potential to transform agriculture and to reduce environmental impact through a green revolution. Internet of Things (IoT)-based application development platforms have the potential to run farm management tools capable of monitoring real-time events when integrated into interactive innovation models for fertirrigation. Their capabilities must extend to flexible reconfiguration of programmed actions. IoT platforms require complex smart decision-making systems based on data-analysis and data mining of big data sets. In this paper, the advantages are demonstrated of a powerful tool that applies real-time decisions from data such as variable rate irrigation, and selected parameters from field and weather conditions. The field parameters, the index vegetation (estimated using aerial images), and the irrigation events, such as flow level, pressure level, and wind speed, are periodically sampled. Data is processed in a decision-making system based on learning prediction rules in conjunction with the Drools rule engine. The multimedia platform can be remotely controlled, and offers a smart farming open data network with shared restriction levels for information exchange oriented to farmers, the fertilizer provider, and agricultural technicians that should provide the farmer with added value in the form of better decision making or more efficient exploitation operations and management.
